Konstantin Chaykin’s invention of a new genre of allegorical watches was realized in the Carpe Diem. The hourglass, one of the classic elements of an allegorical still life, is not just an artistic metaphor or an image on the dial, but a functioning mechanism designed to replace the minute hand. The animated display of the passing minutes is represented by the illusion of golden sand flowing through the hourglass from the upper to the lower spheres. Almost all of Konstantin Chaykin’s watches are decorative in one way or another, but the Carpe Diem undoubtedly stands out with its rich ornamentation. The exhibition sapphire caseback reveals the movement bridges decorated with hand-crafted relief engravings. The caliber K.01-4 of the Carpe Diem watch was developed by Konstantin Chaykin and is equipped with the mechanism of an animated hourglass invented by Konstantin Chaykin. The flow of sand from one bulb to another is represented by moving shutters. The movement is made entirely in Konstantin Chaykin Manufacture according to the standards of haute horlogerie, using traditional techniques for finishing the components: Côtes de Genève, perlage, fine straight and circular grinding, hand-polished chamfers, engravings, polished screw, pin and jewel recesses, ball polishing of the pivots and rhodium plating. A special feature of the movement are the bridges, hand-engraved in relief and finely hammered, and a ‘Pac-Man’ regulator, developed by Konstantin Chaykin for fine adjustment of the hairspring. The animated indication of the minutes as they pass is shown by an illusion of golden sand, flowing through the hourglass from the upper to lower bulbs.
