Schaffhausen | The Boston-born engineer, Florentine Ariosto Jones, founded the "International Watch Co." manufacture in 1868 in Schaffhausen on the “Rhein” (far away from the watch centers of western Switzerland), not by chance. Thundering masses of water tumble over the rocky cliffs of the world-famous “Rheinfall” there. A few kilometers upstream in Schaffhausen, the “Rhein” flows rather leisurely past IWC's studio windows. This is where the legend of a company began more than 150 years ago. Because his business partner Johann Heinrich Moser had invented a system that enabled them to harness the water power of the “Rhein” for industrial purposes and start mechanized watch production. Distinctive originals of timekeeping, this is undeniably the specialty of the watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen in the northeast of Switzerland.
