Very rare Takano Chateau Superior 21-jewel vintage watch, over 65 years old. 22-micron gold-plated case / steel back Hand-wound mechanical movement Runs perfectly, though with a deviation of about 1 minute per day, which is acceptable for a watch over 60 years old Service history unknown Diameter 35.6 mm (approx.) excluding crown New brown crocodile-style leather strap New pin buckle Original crown bearing the Takano logo, which is extremely rare. This is a watch that will appeal to discerning vintage watch enthusiasts. The extreme rarity of Takano watches stems from the fact that this manufacturer’s watch production lasted only a little over four years. This is what has earned it the amusing nickname of the “ghost manufacturer” today. In its early days (1899), Takano manufactured wall clocks and table clocks. In 1957, Takano launched into the production of wristwatches with the stated ambition of competing with the major Swiss brands. The Chateau model dates from 1960—at just 3.5 mm thick, it was then the world’s thinnest central-seconds movement. In 1959, Typhoon Ise-wan caused considerable damage to the company. After financial difficulties, the brand disappeared in 1962. In 2024 — The brand was truly reborn under the leadership of independent watchmaker Hajime Asaoka, recognized as a “Contemporary Master Craftsman” by the Japanese government. The first model of this new era, the Chateau Nouvel Chronometer, is the first Japanese watch to obtain chronometer certification from the Besançon Observatory. The resumption of production in 2024 has put this forgotten brand back in the spotlight. Vintage models in perfect condition now regularly exceed €800, even reaching €1,000. This one isn’t perfect, hence its price. Beyond its value, it’s very comfortable to wear and sparks quite a few questions when I wear it and run into fellow enthusiasts like myself. More than just a watch, you’re buying a piece of watchmaking history.
