Of the seven unique pieces in the inaugural 2024 TAOS collection, ‘Euphorie’ is the most deceptively simple. There is no mosaic, no marquetry, no figurative scene, only enamel and precious metal foil, yet the result is an explosion of gold and silver paillons suspended in a multitude of enamel layers, dominated by reds, oranges, and black. What appears at first glance to be a single incandescent surface reveals itself, on closer inspection, as a construction of remarkable depth. The technique is Grand Feu paillonné enamel, one of the most demanding disciplines in the enameler’s repertoire. Paillons, tiny fragments of gold and silver foil, are overlaid with translucent enamel in successive layers, each requiring its own passage through the kiln, and each firing carrying the risk of ruining everything that came before. Built up layer after layer, firing after firing, the paillons appear to float at different depths within the enamel, producing an almost three-dimensional effect in which the dial seems to glow from within. Like every dial in the collection, it represents over 200 hours of work by the artisans of Atelier Olivier Vaucher in Geneva. The watch is powered by the exclusive self-winding calibre VOP318, developed for TAOS by Swiss movement maker Télôs under the supervision of watchmaker and CEO Olivier Gaud, with around 72 hours of power reserve. Its bridges, conceived as a canvas for the chisel, receive roughly 100 hours of hand engraving, chamfering, and satin finishing, presented in the brand’s 38 mm gold case.
