This watch is part of the Seiko Moving Design Collection which won a Good Design Award in 2007. It was designed by Tomoko Tomita from the Design Center of Seiko. This is the rarest among the “Seiko Discus” models from the collection, limited to just 100 pieces. The SCBS019 with rose gold, and black case are stunning. The rose gold of the case and the brown leather strap with orange stitching accent each other perfectly. The front and back of the case are made of stainless steel with a rose gold plating. The sides and the lugs are made of black material, it is probably PVD. This is produced through the process of PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) Titanium Ion Plating which improves the performance of stainless steel by increasing wear, scratch and corrosion resistance making its durability far superior to conventional coating methods. What is great about the case design is that the attention of the viewer gets drawn to the completely round case. This is facilitated by the black lugs which blend with the brown strap, and create the appearance of lugs being part of the strap rather than being part of the case. Seiko always pays super attention to details. One detail, is how the strap meets exactly at the intersection of the bezel and the case, flowing out at the same rounded angle of the lugs, another is that the four case back locking screws are the same color as the rose gold casing. To reinforce the round design, the time keeping discs are only visible through a round window, and the time keeping discs rotating inside are round. The crown is unassuming and on the small size, it is 5.5mm, thickness is 3 mm, so doesn’t distract from the round case. The dial is completely covered by the hour, minute and second discs of which only a small part can be seen through the 14mm circle of clear crystal. The rest of the dial is almost visible through the espresso-colored frosted crystal, but it is not really readable. The sapphire crystal is about 35mm, and the display-window, at 14mm is a well-balanced look. The back of the watch has the same design as the front. This means that most is of it is frosted, and the mechanical automatic movement is only visible through a small circle of clear crystal. Both the front and back sapphire crystals are convex, and are branded “SEIKO” in silver. The movement used is Seiko's robust 6R15B, which has 23 jewels. oscillating on the frequency of 21,600bph. It hacks, hand winds, and has a power reserve of 50 hours. The watch itself is just a variation on a standard three hand movement. Instead of hands, revolving discs are used to display the time. The outermost ring represents the hours, the center ring, the minutes, and the smallest ring counts the seconds. It is a contradiction of sorts, as it uses a mechanical movement to produce a (semi) digital time display, but that just makes it more interesting. The discs themselves are a slightly textured metal, which adds a nice look, and whereby the front and rear of the watch complement each other. All three discs move smoothly just like normal hands on an automatic watch. There is a small notch in two discs, at the 45 (minutes-disc) and 45 (seconds-disc), for alignment purposes. The proprietary strap connects to the case without leaving a space between the case and the strap, it is specially made to follow the arc of the case, leaving no gaps between the case, lugs and the wrist. The strap is smooth brown leather and finely finished with orange stitching, again to accent the rose gold case. I bought a Rose Gold deployment buckle, branded “SEIKO” to match the watch case. The degree of excellence in fit and finish are what you expect from Seiko, but as with any really successful design object, the whole is a lot more than the sum of its parts, and as a design object the Seiko Discus design is simple, current and minimalist but strangely appealing. It is a head-turner, there is something magical to see a watch tell the time, without any hands.
