For your consideration is a stunning, investment-grade example of American horological history: a rare '24 hour' American Waltham Model 1883, Grade 820 Railroad pocket watch. Produced circa 1908 (Serial #16573136), this massive 18-size timepiece represents the pinnacle of the "Golden Age" of American watchmaking. The crown jewel of this piece is its exceptionally rare 24-hour porcelain double dial. Unlike standard dials of the era, this specialized configuration features traditional Roman numerals paired with a distinct outer ring of 13–24 markings. This "Canadian-style" dial was highly prized by railroad personnel and professionals who required precise 24-hour timekeeping, making it a "holy grail" for many North American collectors today. The dial remains in good condition, maintaining its crisp, clean aesthetic. The watch is powered by a robust 15-jewel Grade 820 movement, housed in a heavy, genuine coin silver open-face case. Beyond its impressive shelf presence, this watch is in remarkable mechanical order—winding smoothly and running with the precision of a modern timepiece. Whether you are a dedicated Waltham enthusiast or a collector seeking a rare "double dial" variant in excellent condition, this Model 1883 is a standout specimen that is ready to be worn, gifted, or proudly displayed. In doing your due diligence on this piece, pay close attention to the intricacies of these pictures attached to this sale. There is a fine hairline crack or marking that runs from approximately from the 11 across to the one and cuts right through the Roman numeral 12 at the top. This should show in the photos. If you look at the back of the watch, you can see some light scratching indentations that I've tried to photograph. Overall, it's in decent shape. Is in working order, winds easily, and is a pleasure to examine. Thank you for reading this description.
