“Chinese Market” Pocket Watch c.1840 | Swiss Made | English Silver Case | w/ Alex Ross & Co. Key A remarkable Swiss “Chinese Market” pocket watch from around 1840, representing the height of 19th-century horological craftsmanship. Produced most likely in Fleurier or Le Locle, this exquisite timepiece belongs to the family of so-called “Chinese Duplex” or “Jacot Duplex” watches — highly decorated export pieces made for the elite of Imperial China. The movement features lavishly hand-engraved gilt bridges, multiple jewels, and ornate detailing throughout, typical of Swiss work for this market. Although often called “Chinese Duplex”, inspection shows a Swiss lever escapement — visible through the plates with a classic club-tooth escape wheel — representing a transitional design from the mid-19th century. The solid silver case carries English-style hallmarks (lion, leopard, and date letter). These are likely imitative rather than genuine London assay marks, a common practice on export pieces that bridged Swiss production, English casing traditions, and the Chinese luxury trade. Completing the ensemble is a period winding key engraved “Alex Ross & Co., Hong Kong” — a notable 19th-century retailer and trading firm. While the key may not be original to the watch, it provides a direct and historically relevant connection to the China Trade era. This is not just a watch — it’s an artefact of global horological history, combining Swiss ingenuity, English styling, and Asian market flair. ⸻ Highlights • Museum-grade craftsmanship: Ornate gilt plates and exceptional decorative engraving. • Historic provenance: Includes Alex Ross & Co. winding key from 19th-century Hong Kong. • Cross-cultural significance: Swiss-made, English-cased, Chinese-market-targeted. • Extremely rare: Functional examples with confirmed provenance are seldom offered.
