A formal mechanical watch with a standard 36 to 40-hour power reserve is found flat on Monday morning. Journe's answer was three years of research, a movement built from scratch, and a result no one else had achieved: 120 hours of chronometric precision from an automatic movement, in a case no larger than its simpler contemporaries. The brass movement is the detail that defines this piece. Journe's first Octa calibres were executed in rhodium-plated brass, the finishing tradition of the great nineteenth-century pocket watch makers and the same material used in his earliest wristwatches. The transition to 18-carat rose gold bridges began in 2004 and was progressively completed across the Octa line. A brass-movement example from 2004 sits at the precise boundary of that shift — the final period before the gold movement became standard, carrying the finishing character of Journe's founding work within the fully resolved Octa architecture. The straight Côtes de Genève found on these early movements, replaced by circular striping on all subsequent calibres, is a further marker that collectors of early Journe recognise without needing to be told. The 38mm platinum case with yellow gold guilloché dial is the original configuration in which the Octa Réserve de Marche first appeared. The subsequent Calibre 1300.3, from 2007, moved to 40mm. This piece predates that evolution entirely. Production of the brass-movement 38mm Réserve de Marche was small by definition — Journe's total annual output has never exceeded 1,000 pieces, and in the early years of the manufacture the numbers were considerably fewer.
