The "third generation" of chronographs powered by Calibre 12 offers collectors an interesting selection, as Heuer has toned down the roaring style of the early 1970s models and expanded the catalog with bimetallic cases and bracelets, black-coated cases (with the Monza), and integrated cases and bracelets (with the Cortina and Daytona). The Jarama fits into this range as a watch that combines the sporting energy of the legendary Spanish Formula 1 track with the elegance of a chronograph suitable for a country club or a luxurious resort. The Heuer chronographs with Calibre 12 from the 1970s evolved through three distinct generations. First came the "launch models," Autavia, Carrera, and Monaco, presented to the world as the first automatic chronographs in March 1969. Then the second generation of Calibre 12 chronographs, starting in 1971, captured the wild style of the 1970s: the oversized and functional Calculator, the Montreal with its bright colors, and the Silverstone with its distinctive blue, red, or smoked tones on the dial. Finally, the third generation, which debuted in 1977, saw Heuer tone down the exuberance of its predecessors, creating a range of chronographs that captured the energy of racing and offered an elegant style suited to prestigious globetrotting customers. For this third series of Calibre 12 chronographs, Heuer used the names of legendary locations. Daytona, Jarama, and Monza are associated with motorsports; Kentucky is one of the most famous locations for horse racing, while the names Cortina and Verona represent Heuer's association with the Italian jet-set lifestyle. The Jarama chronograph expresses the essence of this third generation of Calibre 12 chronographs, capturing the energy and excitement of the legendary Spanish track, along with the glamour of Formula 1. The Jarama circuit is often associated with Gilles Villeneuve, who triumphed here in what is considered one of the greatest battles in Formula 1 history. Villeneuve was, of course, a fan of Heuer chronographs, and usually wore the Autavia and Chronosplit models.
