This vintage Universal Genève gold watch sold by Cartier is the rarest of its kind. The dial featuring dual signatures adds to the watch’s uniqueness and value, making it a coveted piece among both collectors and enthusiasts. Provenance is an important factor in collecting vintage watches, and the dual signature on this watch enriches its history. The retailer’s name stamped on the dial provides a starting point for understanding the watch and its journey. This historical link between the brand and the retailer further enhances the watch’s value and desirability. The Universal Genève brand boasts a long and rich history, dating back to 1894, and is known for its high-quality timepieces. The addition of the Cartier signature on the dial of this particular watch only serves to enhance its prestige and rarity. This watch is not only a beautiful and functional timepiece but also holds significant historical and cultural value. It represents an era when watches were more than mere accessories—they were status symbols and investments. It stands as a testament to the craftsmanship and attention to detail of the watchmakers who created it, as well as to the culture and society in which it was produced. The movement is no small matter: it is the venerable Caliber 1-66 with a micro-rotor. When it was introduced, it was the world’s thinnest automatic movement until 2003, surpassed only by the Piguet 71, a true work of art. In addition to the clearly visible reference and serial numbers, there is a serial number on the caseback and, engraved on the back of a lug, a secret four-digit stamp; Cartier used this to produce Universal Genève watches sold at retail and in its own stores. Condition This watch is in mint condition, never polished, and with very sharp edges. It has tiny micro-scratches almost imperceptible to the naked eye, likely caused by being stored in the box for all these years. The original box, the leather and silk strap, and the signed solid gold buckle are included. The watch was serviced in June 2023 and keeps good time in working condition.
