Description

Iconic Lip Nautic-Ski watch from 1967–1974 (designed in 1967), very rare in this Jumbo configuration and in this exceptional condition, with a bright red Tropic strap that matches the dial beautifully. It is exceptional in many ways: - Its technical prowess: the first French watch to reach a depth of 200 meters, thanks to its extremely water-resistant “Super Compressor” case, patented by the Ervin-Piquerez brothers (EPSA), and highly sought after by divers, seafarers, and mountaineers—whether professionals or amateurs—as well as collectors around the world today; This is why the most renowned maritime professionals adopted it, such as Commander Cousteau and his Calypso crews for deep-sea dives, or Tarbarly, France’s greatest navigator, until his disappearance aboard the Pendwick. - Its history: Designed to celebrate the brand’s 100th anniversary in 1967 and for the 1968 Grenoble Olympic Games, it was launched under the name “Nautic-Ski” by Frédéric Lip due to its rugged durability in marine and mountain environments; both he and his daughter were passionate about skiing, and she was a ski champion on the French national team until 1956. - The watch for extreme conditions, designed as a professional diving watch: ultra-waterproof, with an internal rotating crown to prevent accidental activation, a jumbo case to protect the crowns and the diver, and a reinforced crystal for resistance to ultra-high pressures. - Its technological edge over its time: featuring a hybrid mechanism that combined the best of both worlds—mechanical movements for robustness and electronics for precision and practicality, as it required no winding and ran continuously for about one year. - Its large 42mm diameter (excluding crowns), crafted from stainless steel, gives it a very contemporary look and makes it a striking presence on the wrist, both aesthetically and in terms of weight. - Its exceptional condition and functionality: * 42 mm case (excluding crowns) with a lug width of 22 mm, featuring sandblasted sides, a bevel, and mirror-polished lug tops, along with a circular-brushed outer bezel. Steel case back with still-legible engravings of the Besançon logo and serial number 728789 + “super waterproof patent pending / lip electronic.” Superb condition. Barely noticeable wear scratches * Its two large crowns are protected by the Jumbo case, which features very sharp edges and a diamond-patterned engraving for better grip when wearing diving gloves (the diamond pattern on the inner bezel crown is less deep) * Immaculate, highly luminous dial featuring the Olympic colors of blue, white, and red—vibrant hues that alternate between satin and polished finishes—with applied hour markers at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock, and a minute track with orange Luminova markers.Labeled “Lip / Super Nautic Ski” due to its case size, which is significantly larger than that of its already highly water-resistant 36.5 mm “little sister.” * Ultra-transparent reinforced crystal (small chip on the edge at 9 o’clock, virtually invisible from the front) * Steel baton and blade hands, in very good condition with full lume except for the minute hand, which has a slight loss of material. * The proven electromechanical caliber R 184, with date function. Battery replaced. This legendary and iconic watch from the history of French watchmaking—and indeed the entire world—is featured in numerous watchmaking publications, such as the two editions of Marie-Pia Auschitzky’s book *Des heures à conter* (pages 149 and 176).
